Sterling. Dollars are a bit weak at the moment. Or rupees, but Sterling will go further. Euros might also be a good bet...

if you can take rupee, it is much better as there is no hassle of getting the money changed. however, if you are taking foreign currency you can take sterling or dollars.

you cant buy rupees outside India, and you are not allowed to bring them out of the country either. We are going next month and will take sterling

US dollars are depreciating against Indian rupees. So go for Euros! Best exchange rate can be gotten inside India, I would suggest that.

don't take dollars cuz at the moment they r week and most major hotels in India stopped taking dollars cuz of their fall rate...so take rupees for u won't have to find a place to convert ur money
