What do you do in India to stay cool on hot days?

Namaste

Have you something special to recommend?

Something cooling to eat, or some
special thing to do .....

Sometimes when I was in India, I would be hot all the way to the center of my body, and I would like to avoid that this next time when I return. Also, coming with me this time is my gentleman friend who likes very much to stay cool! He has not experienced long periods of being in India as I have, but he needs some sort of thing to do for himself, too! Since you do know the various ways of *beating the heat*,
could you make some recommendations for him too?

Thank you very much for any advice you have to offer either of us

To be honest, nothing much or special because going against nature harms the body and the metabolism in the long run, though the effects may not show themselves up immediately.
Even my all-American friends, when they are my guests in India in the summers, are advised by me to go as much with the nature as possible. With only few precautions, they don't try to live in an artificial atmosphere which is totally reverse to the outside conditions and the running weather, and they have always done fine without any illness etc.
Main thing is that you should not be afraid of the mother nature even in unknown territories and should not get scared by imaginary fears. Then you are safe. Guaranteed!

have u never heard of a contraption called air conditioner.

chandra
The usual things...drink plenty of water

Stay in the shade as much as possible especially during the middle of the day when the sun is at its strongest.

Get near water and paddle your feet or swim

Lassi is quite cooling

A nice face spray?

ALWAYS cover your head

Nomatter what you try drinking lots of water seems to help keep your body temperature stable

At the end of the day I don't think we can fully beat the heat - but we can fully ENJOY it!!!!!!

save for the 3 months > mid march to mid june
this is the time when the subcontinent is on fire
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_India#Summer

rest, you should not be unduly worried
cottons, cottons and cottons only
white and light colored
fluids and more fluids
nariyal pani ( coconut water ), jeera pani > lol
umbrella to keep you from direct exposure to the sun
guess that's more than half the job done
< sunglass, hat, sun-tan lotion too, if it helps, but none of which i personally use >

as regards the gentleman on his first trip,
you may need to go a little out of the way if the going gets tough or unbearable
hill stations aplenty
as also a long long coastline with pristine beaches

few handy tips,

edit:
i have no clue how much of india you can soak in, cocooned in an airconditioned bubble

also, to Kris above me < in good humour >
i would love to customize you an airconditioned hut
and an airconditioned mule cart
now dreaming up an airconditioned beach

i would wear a hat, i would also wear sunglasses i would wear sun tan sunscreen lotion and a few cucumber slices and relaxing with a chilled drink

Dear Jeera Paani,
YOu already got lots of valuable suggestions to put Sun Screen and turn on the ACs.

Here are some suggestions,
In East India, people eat "Khuskhus" a lot, using it in bhajji or even eating the Khuskhus paste with rice. That cools off the body a lot. Caution! you might feel sleepy eating this.

In South, a variation of Lassi/Chaas is used to cooloff, also there is a Tamarind water they drink to cool off the heat.

Eating Raw Onions, particulary the babby onions cool off, but you need to take care of your breath.

Hope this will help.

Namaste

Just be inside the AC room and AC car and AC office.

Go to the beaches for nice breeze

Stay home when its too hot and use sunscreen

Just have lots of fans and drink lots of water.

Bye
