wow... india is a very large country with a LOT of diversity, so i think the souveneir should be according to the region you went, unless you want something that pertains to all of india.(if that is possible).

As you travel, get to know the culture. See the reoccuring elements of daily life. If you are in southern india, buy some tea from the plantation areas. ALso, make sure it pertains to the receiver: If you have friends that like candy or soda... get some unique indian candy or sodas... some people will appreciate t-shirts more than others as well.

As for yourself, try to remember your trip with a handmade indian craft or antique that will always remind you of your travels. Don't just buy a pencil eraser from a gift shop... you'll use it or lose it. not very special.

I have always found that any gift that is 'forced' usually isn't the one with the most meaning. and the gift with the most meaning is the one that will be most appreciated by the receiver.

That would depend. India is a large country and depending on which part of the country you are in you will find a variety of Indian handicrafts, etc., that you can choose from.
For female friends, you could take some silk scarves, If you want to give someone something for their home, you can get some beautiful wall hangings or dhurris, You can get good carvings, paintings, the list goes on.

I would offer batik garments, jewelry or wooden statues as perfect souvenirs. Anyway, this thing should be handmade and typical for the region you have visited.

You have many suggestions from my friends above, now it is more of your convenience to carry and your budget.

As I think from the length and breadth of India, each area has got its unique specialty to offer. Two common things come to my mind - that of brass and wood hand carving. Souvenirs made of them come in all budgets and sizes. So, you may also consider brass and wood carved items.

U can think of bringing a model of 'Tajmahal' as (1) as a symbol of Love (2) as it is one of the 7 wonders of the world.

It will depend on the taste of your friends.

However, India being one of the oldest civilisations, you might take some thing depicting its culture.

There are paintings which are typical to a particular region of India. Virtually each state has got a different style of painting.

Handicrafts - you have to be careful due to space and weight - is another area where you can have a large variety to chose from, especially the tribal handicrafts that you find in many places.

You can take some clothes. These days Indian designers are clothing the celebrities abroad. Some of these designers have very affordable clothing lines. You can also take clothes without designer tags, but nevertheless made from very good fabrics and prints belonging to traditional styles.

And last but not the least, Ganesha idols have become a virtual craze along with the laughing Buddha. Ganesha idols are supposed to destroy all roadblocks and bring you luck.

If nothing else, then take picture postcards.
