Swapan, The Dream
Adam's Bridge, also called Rama's Bridge is a chain of limestone shoals, between the islands of Mannar, near northwestern Sri Lanka, and Rameswaram, off the southeastern coast of India. The bridge is 30 miles (48 km) long and separates the Gulf of Mannar (southwest) from the Palk Strait (northeast). Some of the sandbanks are dry and the sea in the area is very shallow, being only 3 ft to 30 ft (1 m to 10 m) deep. This seriously hinders navigation. It was reportedly passable on foot up to the 15th century until storms deepened the channel: temple records seem to say that Rama’s Bridge was complete above sea level until it broke in a cyclone in 1480 AD.

The land bridge named as Adam's Bridge is a narrow ridge of sand and rocks, mostly dry, which connects Mannar Island (Sri Lanka) with Pamban Island (India) about 18 miles West-North-Westward. At high tide it is covered by c.4 ft (1.2 m) of water. The status of the bridge is still a mystery as the legends trace the bridge to have more than a million years of existence and related to the epic Ramayana. The Srilankan Archeology Department also confirms the possible duration of the bridge's existence to be around one to two million years. However the natural or man-made status of the bridge is unknown.

It is from the period of Ramayana, that Sri Rama constructed the bridge with the help of the monkey kingdom.

American satellites have discovered an old bridge between India & Sri Lanka, under the sea. They have named it as 'ADAMS BRIDGE'. Since, it is at the place, WHERE RAMAYANA DESCRIBES, AS RAMA CONSTRUCTED A BRIDGE, it is claimed by Indians, as Shree Ram Sethu.

The Indian epic Ramayan narrates that Lord Ram made a bridge from the Indian mainland across the sea, to Sri Lanka. He took his army across to rescue his wife who had been kidnapped by the King of Lanka, Ravan. This happened eons ago - about 1.7 million years ago.
Shree Ram is how we Hindus address Lord Ram, and setu means bridge. Hence Shree Ram Setu
It was rediscovered by a NASA satellite a few years ago - and has been renamed by western scientists as Adam's Bridge. The pictures of the bridge are on the web to see.

The name Rama's Bridge originates in Hindu belief. According to the Hindu epic Ramayana (Chapter 66, The Great Causeway [2]), the bridge was constructed at Rama's request by his allies. The bridge was supported on floating sand rocks but the gods were said to have later anchored the rocks to the sea bed, thus creating the present chain of rocky shoals. It was said to have helped Rama to reach Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king (Asura) called Ravana, who was then the ruler of Lanka.

News services like the Indian Express, HindustanTimes (Press Trust of India), Vaishnava News Network and Indolink claimed that the bridge is evidence that events narrated in the Ramayana epic actually took place, and cite NASA's imagery of it as proof of their claims. Various estimates were made regarding the age of the bridge by archeologists and a team from CRS (Center for Remote Sensing):

Rama’s bridge could only be 3,500 years old according to the Centre for Remote Sensing (CRS) of Bharathidasan University in Tiruchi -[1]

However, NASA has distanced itself from the claims related to the epic Ramayana:

"The images [...] may be ours, but their interpretation is certainly not ours. [...] Remote sensing images or photographs from orbit cannot provide direct information about the origin or age of a chain of islands, and certainly cannot determine whether humans were involved in producing any of the patterns seen."[2]

The Hindu also published a report saying that Adam's Bridge is a natural phenomenon and not a man-made one.[3]

[edit] Infrastructure development

Recently the Government of India has approved a multi-million dollar Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project that aims to create a ship channel across the Palk Strait. The plan is to dredge the shallow ocean floor near the Dhanushkodi end of Rama's Bridge to create enough leeway allowing ships to pass through the channel instead of having to go around the island of Sri Lanka. It is expected to save nearly 30 hours' shipping time by cutting over 400 km off the voyage. However, efforts to conserve the heritage of the bridge has been initiated under the Ram Karmabhoomi movement; and there is fear that the large amount of dredging needed would damage coral reefs in the area, directly and by stirring up sediment.

Adam's Bridge or Rama's Bridge (rä'mə) , chain of shoals, c.18 mi (30 km) long, in the Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka. At high tide it is covered by c.4 ft (1.2 m) of water. A steamer ferry links Rameswaram, India, with Mannar, Sri Lanka. According to Hindu legend, the bridge was built to transport Rama, hero of the Ramayana, to the island to rescue his wife from the demon king Ravanna.
