U cud shop at the so called new market perviously called HOGG market.U cud simply buy the cotton materials and sarees and get them stitched into something else when u r back home. Of course sweeeeets, dont forget to taste ROSGULLAS. Its very famous they r made of milk and sugar. U can carry them with u back home as well. Other than that may be u can shop for som Hindu religious sculptures.... really small ones as artifacts or other handicraft items in brass and wood. Also they have very pretty traditional silver jewellry if u r interested. Other than all this just shop along the way... watever u like. Incase u need anything in particular... say shoes or leather items or anything for example... ask the locals they will guide u.

Calcutta cotton sarees are famous, if you know someone you can gift them to. Plus the sweets... Ah, I can still taste the Mishti Doi from my last trip there :)

Two things you absolutely cannot leave Cal wihout..
a) Rasagullas and Misthi Doi(tatz sweet curd)
b) Bengal Cotton / Dhakaai Silk saris. Pick 'em out in any standard shop in New Market.
But, since you are around already, go to Peter Cat and eat thier Chelo Kebabs. They are the best. And eat puchkas off a roadside vendor. Ah! amaar kolkata!

Buy sweets, cheap electronics, cheap everthing for all fake stuff at so many places there. Eat well and enjoy the city. After all thats what makes Calcutta so special. The food, the lifestyle and the people. Dont forget to see the Howrah bridge, esplanade and victoria memorial amongst so many other places to see there.
