For one day picnic you can opt for the sea beach of Alibaug or the ghats of Lonavala-Khandala. Kashid beach , which is some about an hours auto -ride from Albaug is even better. There is place called Karnala caves near Lonavala-thats also a good spot.Matheran would require atleast two days if you want to explore the scenic beauties completely. Mahabaleswar is too far. Uran has a beach but not so good for day picnic.
There's a beach at Kelwa..take a train to Virar first and then a passenger train from Virar to Kelwa Road (one that goes to Palghar) and then a ric. The place is a rustic one...u'll enjoy the beach.

Enough ideas already exist but i would add the missing one which my hot favourite.
ALIBAUG- 1 hr catamarin ride will take u to alibaug. the cruise itself has it's own fun. The sagar fort(on an island near alibaug beach) is a jolly good place . During low tide u can walk through sea(1km) to reach it. Wait for high tide & u will be isolated from the world for 4 hrs. Just walk along the walk-way on the top of the fort-wall, which is all along the sea coast. When tide recedes again walk back or ride a horse-carriage to reach back. Believe me, it's an experience of a life time and at an affordable cost.

Matheran, Khandala

snonymous
Elephanta which is a 1hr boatride from Gateway, or Alibag (too crowded on holidays). Lonavla, Khandala are also too crowded.
You could go to Barvi Dam near Badlapur, take Shil phata towards Kalyan and turn right on pipeline rd all the way to the dam.
If you are in a group you can go to the many resorts such as Silent Resort at Manor on NH8 or Great Escape off Vajreshwari Rd on Parol-Bhiwandi Rd.
Off the Shirsat Vajreshwari Rd also there are some nice peaceful spots nr the Tansa river.
You can also go to Bordi beach nr Dahanu (3hs on NH8) or to Tansa WLS (2-3hr NH3) or spend the day at Sanjay Gandhi NP at Borivli, its really nice.
Karnala is also another option on Goa Hwy.
Matheran requires at least 2nts visit, 1 day is too rushed.
Igatpuri about 3hrs on NH3 is also nice but best during monsoons.
You can also take the Bhiwandi Wada Suryamal route which is uphill through dense forests and valleys between Wada / Suryamal. After you pass Parali village there is a rough track on the right which goes upto Vaitarna (Modak sagar) lake through forests, its a good walk or you need a jeep.
Kolad and the perennial Kundalika river is also a good area about 3hrs on Goa Hwy.
Malshej Ghat area is also nice in the winter season due to the altitude (3hrs via NH3 upto Kalyan fata then take Murbad Nagar Rd)
Enjoy your picnic and remember dont litter.

I would suggest Matheran. For more check, http://www.holidayiq.com/destinations/Matheran-Overview.html

You could go to Mahabaleshwar or Matheran (You need to take a train to Neral station and from there a toy train up to Matheran).

You could also go to Khandala and Lonavala which are two hill stations.

Ganapatiphule is a good place so is Vajreshwari Hot Water Springs.

Uran and Malvani too have good beaches.

You are planning for a day only.... it means it must be near to Mumbai, must provide you nice food and possibly shelter to.

Go to Arnala beach.

You need to take VIRAR train from any of the western railway stations. From Dadar it is 1 hour journey. Take a ST bus from Virar or opt for a autorickshaw ( on west side of the station). Arnala is about 11 kms away from Virar.

Open seas, nice beach, lots of options for food and easy to commute. Of course being a beach, it is bit crowded. But if you are planning a picnic now, it should be fairly less crowded, exams of school kids are nearer hence less crowds.

You can opt for " C beach Resort" at Arnala, if you need to be really away from crowds. Nice, hugh space, excellent food, a swimming pool, badminton court, table tennis tables, clean rooms and a conference hall, too. You need not even go out. The charges are also reasonable. Contact them before you drop there and book in advance.

Enjoy urself.
