Are you talking mid range...then nothing beats The Residency (75 US $ per night including breakfast) on GN Chetty Road in terms of value for money. Slightly more expensive but better hotels are Residency Towers, GRT Grand or Quality Inn Aruna.

If you are a budget traveller, go to this homely place called The Hive. It is slightly out of the way (Thoraipakkam, near the beach on the way to Pondicherry) It is run by this guy called Kenneth. You will meet a lot of nice people there and he charges about 25 USD including breakfast. You can call Kenneth on +919840330232. I always stay there...
