Tamil Nadu meaning Tamil Land should have its capital as Madurai since it has rich history and the Madurai Tamil Sangam and Kalai Colleges are there. But for Economy, Chennai is the capital due to its location and harbour.

Actually, it was "Chennaputnam" initially but then it was made "Madras". Then, it was again changed to "Chennai" which is named after the original one.
