I have just come back from Kodaikannal.We left Puttaparti by car,drove all the way to Bangalore and reached Kodai and the whole trip took us 15 hours.The trip from Bangalore to Kodai was 12 hours.Wish I could be of much help. |

Kodaikanal - One of the most beautiful Hill Towns in India is situated in the Palni Hills. It is an important eco-tourist spot but at the same time threatened by two potential issues - the Eutrophication of the lake and the Pollution by tourists.
Around small artificial lake, Kodaikanal is on the southern crest of Palani Hills, about 120 kms. It is the hill station to visit rather than Ooty, as unlike Ooty the temperature here rarely drops to the point where you need wear heavy clothing in winter and some of the views to the south are quiet spectacular, and within easy walking distance of the centre of the town. The best season to visit Kodaikanal is April to June or August to October. At an altitude of 2133 mts., temperatures are mild, ranging between 11°C and 20°C in summer and 8°C and 17°C.

The nearest airport to the Kodaikanal Observatory is Madurai (130km from Kodaikanal Observatory), in the state of Tamil Nadu.
one can directly fly to Madurai by domestic flights from Chennai. From Madurai land transport will be provided by taxi or bus. It will take about 3 hrs to reach Kodaikanal.

The nearest railway station is Kodaikanal Road (80km from Kodaikanal observatory).
Road Connection
Kodaikanal Observatory is located 4km from Kodaikanal town and may be reached by road from Bangalore, via Salem and Dindigul and from Madurai via Kodaikanal road.

Distance between Bangalore and Madurai is 426 kms. From Madurai to Kodai, it is 126 kms. From madurai, there is a small deviation in the bangalore road at Kodai Road. Distance between Kodai road and Madurai is 36 kms. Hence, if u are planning to Kodai directly from B`lore, you can save 36 + 36 kms. Time taken to cover by car is roughly 10 hrs. But, the uphill journey is really good and can`t be negleted. Hence, my suggestion is to take the uphill and downhill journey in the day time. Rout map to Kodai:
B`lore ---> Hosur ---> Krishnagiri ---> Dharmapuri ---> Salem ---> Namakkal ---> Karur ---> Dindigul ---> Kodai road ---> To madurai for pleasent stay or take diversion from Kodai Road and then ---> Nillakottai ---> Vathalagundu ---> uphill journey starts in Kodai hills.
