All over India we recognize Agra for its Petha and Mathura for its Pedha and Petha is available all over India so whats so different in Agra ?
Agra's speciality is the wet petha in suger syrup but its not as extremely sweet as available else where and its soft instead of the dry crunchy ones.
If you ask for Mumbai Chowpathy bhel in Udaypur you would definitely get one but you will throw the dish away because it would taste quite differently because it has been palatised for the local rajasthani taste. Same with the petha's. |

Dear Prakash,
Petha and that too only from "Panchhi Peta Bhandar". Popular among the pethas are kesar-elaichi, angoori (sugar syrup dipped), dry-fruit stuffed and flavoured cube. Also, donot forget to pick up his "Dal Moth" Namkeen.
There are lot of fakes available, please do not get fooled with spelling and font differences. So I thought I will give you the addresses as well. They have 4 outlets:-
1. Panchhi Petha Store‎, Dholpur House, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Agra.
2. Panchhi Petha Bandar, Opposite Gurudwara Guru Ka Taal, Sikandra, Agra
3. Panchhi Petha Store, Hari Parvat Crossing, Hari Parvat, Agra
4. Panchhi Petha Dalmoth‎, Opposite Heera Talkies, Bye Pass Road, Agra
Enjoy lovely Petha and Dal Moth... |

Visiting Agra is incomplete without sampling the famous Petha. Made from white pumpkin ( so humble and so down to earth ) , this popular sweet simply melts in the mouth. There are quite a few good sweets shops all round the city. The best stores for buying the famous petha of Agra are at Hari Parwat, a short ride from Agra Fort. Amongst the well-known stores are Panchi's , Bhimsain BaidyaNath and The Pracheen Petha store. There are many types of petha available but, for the authentic experience, try either the plain one (ivory white) or Angoori Flavored (rectangular and yellow pieces soaked in sugar syrup). Other stores in Agra include: Bikanervala, Deviram, Munnalal Petha, Gopaldas, and Ajanta Sweets, Kamla Nagar. You can choose from 12 to 13 different kinds of Petha to satiate your sweet tooth. Opt the plain or kesar one. |

Recipe of Agra Ka Petha
You will need
½ kg white pumpkin
4 cups water
1 cup lime water
½ kg sugar
2 tablespoon lime juice
6-7 cardamoms , powdered
1 teaspoon rose water
Method
1, Wash and peel the pumpkin. Discard the seeds and mushy centre. Cut the pumpkin into square pieces and soak in water for nearly two hours. Wash the pieces once again, pat dry and soak in lime water for three hours. Drain and cook the pumpkin in water till it turns transparent.
2, Now take the sugar, lime juice and cardamom and mix to get a thin syrup. Immerse the pumpkin in this syrup and place it over medium heat for a few minutes. Remove from heat and pour a few drops of rose water over the pieces. The petha is now ready. Serve with a smile…. |
