PIN Code Information
Postal Index Number (PIN) is a 6 digit code.
There are 8 PIN regions in the country.
The first digit indicates one of the regions.
The first 2 digits together indicate the sub region or one of the postal circles.
The first 3 digits together indicate a sorting / revenue district.
The last 3 digits refer to the delivery Post Office.
The Postal Index Number Code System, known as the PIN Code system was introduced in India on the 15th of August, 1972. The objective of PIN Code is to simplify the sorting of mails and speed up their transmission and delivery. PIN Code avoids the confusion which results out of duplication of names of various places. Correct delivery of mails is possible if the PIN Code is written, even when the address may be written in any language

No "country" has zip code or pin code. Its the area in a city, town or district or village would have a pin code.
Please be specific about the place in India that you are looking for. You can google the name of the place with pin code in key words and you would get the details.
If you looking for country code to call up anyone over the phone then its 0091 or you can enter +91 followed by mobile number or followed by STD code then landline number. |

India does not have Zip code, but has PIN code - Postal Index number.
Postal Index Number (PIN) or Zip code is a 6 digit code. There are 8 PIN regions in India. Understanding how PIN Code works is simple if you understand the following:
The first two digits of the PIN Code together indicates the sub region or one of the postal circles.
The first three digits of the PIN Code together indicates a sorting / revenue district.
The last three digits of the PIN Code refer to the delivery Post Office.
There are many ways to get the Pin codes for different locations. A hard copy directory can be purchased in "General Post Offices" - the main post offices in India. Another poster has given a link which will give you the number, if you know the post office name. |

Well , if you are asking about the PIN code that we use in our postal addresses, it is an abbreviation of "Postal Index Number" code. It is a six digit code where almost each and every taluk, village and patta land ic covered. The first two digits represent the state. For example if the first rwo digits start with 60,61,62,63,64and 65 , it is Tamil Nadu.
Actually the first digit is the region, 6 stands for Tamil Nadu and Kerala. the first digit 5 is for Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
The second digit indicates the sub-region.
The third digit is the sorting district- this is a term particular to the postal department.
The fourth , fifth and the sixth digits are the post office.
This is just like the US ZIP code an acronym created by the US postal department. ZIP code is Zone Improvement Plan.

S.Suresh

It is different from ZIP(Zonal Index). Here each Post office is given a unique number and the numbering is as follows:
Suppose the number is 600 002 - 03.
Here 6 depitcts Tamil Nadu and then the next 2 digits the district and the last 3 digits the develivery post office. After wards a space and an iphen(-) is put and 01, 02, etc. are written This o1, 02 indicates the delivery beat within that post office.
Suppose 600 002 - 03 means Tamil Nadu - Chennai - Anna Salai P.O. and the beat No. 03.
Likewise for Delhi it is 100 001 - 01, Calcutta it is 700 001 - 02 etc. |
