The shortest way to kodaikanal is through salem, palani and kodaikanal. Kpn travels go in this route. the ticket price may be around Rs.500/person. Ksrtc Rajahamsa takes a long route salem, karur, dindigul, kodai road and kodaikanal. The bus is not so convenient and very slow but the ticket price around Rs.300/person. There is also train(Tuticorin express) where u can get down at kodai road and hire a taxi.

there are buses available in kpn,ksrtc/SETC which is safest and fair is little cheapest in KSRTC/SETC.
