What kind of visa do i need to go to india?

i am an american citizen, im planning to stay for roughly a month . ive heard some talk about on arrival visas, would they apply to me? also what is the difference between an entry visa, and a tourist visa? basically im asking what would be the easiest to obtain.

See site below and read Section under "entry zrequirements. There is a link in the 3rd paragraph to Indian Embassy website. this website streeses there are no on arrival visas, but has no visa appliction info. 1st site below is a visa service that can get visa for you for a fee. 2nd site is the Indian consulate in San Francisco, which has visa application info. Looks like you need the 180 day tourist visa.

best is to yahoo or google "indian high commission US" and find out the address of the consulate.

They will be able to guide you and the information given will be reliable and authentic.

You CANNOT just show up in India and expect to get a visa as an American (or any other nationality for that matter). India does not have a visa on-arrival scheme. You either need to get an Indian visa from an Indian embassy/consulate in your home country or if you belong to a country that has the visa requirement waived or if you hold a PIO (Person of Indian Origin) or an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card you do not need a visa to enter India.

From the sound of it, it sounds like you will require Tourist Visa which is typically valid for 6 months. If you plan to leave India and travel nearby (like Sri Lanka, Nepal etc.) be sure you get a multiple entry visa for India.
