The national languages of India are Hindi and English. The most widely spoken is Hindi and other popular languages include Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali, Sindhi, Marathi, Tamil, Telegu, and Malyalam to name a few. There are 22 of these official regional languages. The list of languages in India is quite extensive, however, as there are 200+ spoken in India. |

There are quite a few languages spoken in India with people from neighbouring states speaking languages which the other would not understand
Northern India speaks Hindi and various regional dialects of Hindi like Marathi, Gujarathi, Bengali, while in South India, the predominant languages spoken are Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
But in most parts of India, you should be able to survive with some basic English and decent Hindi. |

Hindi in all of its dialects is the most popular language in India.
English is also spoken quite widely as well, especially in the more urban areas. |
