What not to do in India...Taboos? |
I need to know what NOT to do over in India as a part of my "end of the year project." Can anyone help? I'm talking about things like, "never point at things with your feet or hands, it's rude."

Don't EVER EVER use your left hand for anything! Unless your wiping your butt.
If you are eating, use your right hand for eating and your left to grab your glass. NEVER use the same hand for eating and grabbing your glass.
NEVER wear your shoes inside the house. You take them off at the door step (leave outside please). Unless you are entering the home of a lower caste.
Don't eat unless you've showered.
Don't wear white - it's the widow's color.
Widows eat by themselves.
Untouchables do NOT enter the living quarters. They may stay in the main hall to chat. Or, they can clean the bathrooms and main hall.
Traditionally, the woman does not walk beside her husband. She walks two steps back.
With my in laws black is considered very unlucky and no one is allowed to wear black.
DON'T ever let food from the temple, blessed by the gods, go to spoil. You'll be cursed. (Or, that's what my mother in law says) |

hi daniel, India has progressed a lot since good old times..but still culturally speaking, these would be the NOT to do things in a typical hindu/muslim house
1. do not speak to your elders in a high tone/backanswer
2. do not wear footwear inside the house.
3. do not wear revealing clothes.
4. do not hurt the cow
the rest are in tune to the world culture. |
