What percentage of the indian population is vegetarian? |
I know most hindus don't eat beef but can anyone tell me what percentage of people in india (hindu or otherwise) are fully vegetarian and eat no meat? Thanks Additional Details I would define a vegetarian as someone who doesn't eat any part of any animal. They can eat unfertilized eggs because these would not turn into chicks if you left them. Vegetarians that eat eggs and consume milk are called lacto-ovo vegetarians.
A vegan is someone who doesn't eat any animals or their by products (milk, eggs, honey, leather, wool etc) |

Nearly 37% of Indians are vegetarians. As for me I am a born vegetarian. I dont even take eggs. Sometimes I do take milk but as a medicine if requred. How ever, religion has no role to play in this.I am a vegetarian out of of mercy towards animals.
Swapan The dream-----Your assumptions are almost true. Most of the vegetarians are in northern, central, and western parts of India. |

Going by additional info for discounting lacto-evo-vegetarians....it will be about 7% to 10% of the population who is Veggi in India.
Contrary to the belief of some contributors, more veggies stay in southern part of India...All good non-veg recipes originate from North India...Chicken Tandoori, Fish Koliwada(Punjab), Laal Maas (Rajasthan), Galauti, kakkori, botti, shammi, sheek kababs (UP), Mutton/Chicken Dhansag (Parsi), Gosht ki Yakhni(Kashmiri), Bombil dish of Maharastra.....Lagan nu Bhonu (Gujrathi/Parsi)...Ayudhi Beriyanis......
Compared to the Southern part....Daam/Kachhi Beriyani, chicken chettinadu, Kozi Kozambu, Fish Moile....
This variation itself suggest the concentration of non-veg eaters is high in northern states. |

about 40% are Vegetarian in sense that they have never eaten meat/egg..
but even those who comes in non-vegetarian category do not eat meat all the time..Many ppl consider themselves non-vegetarian but eat meat once in a week or month ...
Also those who eat eggs are considered Non-vegetarian ... |

No census data available for it. However my guess is as follows -
As per my calculation 32% Indians are veegetarian.
Assumptions -
In most of the states 30% are vegetarian
In Gujrat 90% are vegetarian
In Rajasthan 60% are vegetarian |

During my International cuisine class, my chef said that more than 80% of the population of India is vegetarian.
We went on to talk about how a good majority of the country is Hindu, and they do not eat beef, nor drink milk from them either. Some also refrain from eating eggs as well. |

My men in my husbands family considers themselves vegetarian even though they eat eggs, his mother and sisters consider themselves vegetarian and that eating eggs are wrong because they are unborn animals who could develop into full animals.
Kindly define vegetarian. About 75% of Indians consider themselves vegetarian, but about 90% Hindu Indians consider themselves vegetarian. |
