You should go to New Delhi a few days a head and shop there for your outfit. You will find something that is in style there and you will have more options and if you don't like anything from the shops, you can always get a outfit tailored.
If I was in you shoes I would go to New Delhi a few days before the event and shop around for something traditional with a twist.
Good Luck and Enjoy your self. |

I was in Dehli last Feb. and I can tell you without hesitation that you can wear whatever you are accustomed to wearing. I had the same concerns before I went. Certainly, you can shop there for Indian clothing, but it is not necessary and you will be very comfortable wearing western clothing. No problem. Are you going to Mumbai for a Bollywood evening? Wear something that you would wear to a similar event in your home country. It will be hot, so dress comfortably, but keep your shoulders covered. I would suggest capris or pants for sightseeing, not shorts. Wear closed toed shoes - not sandals. India is not for the faint of heart - you will be overwhelmed with people, traffic, etc. Be ready. Travel light and plan to buy alot of cool things. Great shoes, scarves, purses, jewelry - all very resaonable as compared to the USA. Have fun. P.S. Don't miss the Taj Mahal. Hire a car with a driver from one of the tourist guides in your hotel room. It is about $100 USD, but well worth it. Don't use the hotel's car service to the Taj - they will be way overpriced!
BTW, I saw an answer below that says you should wear a scarf and hat. Feb. is spring in Dehli and you will not be needing a scarf and wool hat!!!! It gets colder at night, but the days are plenty warm somewhere around 24C/75F - often warmer when we were there. I would be more concerned with staying cool (esp. if you are an American) than I would be with staying warm. Take a light jacket for evenings, but believe me, it is not like you are going to the Arctic. |

Wear a nice hugging sweater on jeans or trousers. Add a colorful muffler and stylised woolen cap ! That will be so cool and will keep you warm too. Be nicely covered as Feb means winters ! |

Boy or girl ?
Normal shirt, trousers, capri, baggy are OK for India.
For girls do not use off shoulder dress or backless dress - in fact do not expose much skin. In most of the places people are conservative or perverted or both.
For traditionals Indian dress -
Boy - Kurta Pajama, Sherwani

You need to cover up your legs-baggy trousers or long skirt and top of your arms at least. If you go down the old(or is it new) bizaar(travellers area),you are spoilt for cheap baggy clothes. Don't forget to wear money belt on inside of trousers/skirt or they cut it off and steal it.Enjoy! |
