sanjay has given some good advice, but i would not include elephanta. it was a waste of time for me. but still go for a ferry ride. spend some time at marine drive, its a great experience. it has lots of great restaurants, so definitely go to a couple... taste panipuri! and bombay is just not complete without its local trains. so go on a short ride, make sure it is not the peak hours though! you will get a feel of the varied culture of bombay in a train ride. i would suggest churchgate to bandra in the afternoon.

There are full day coach tours by various tour operators available which start from various points in the city which you can catch from various points they cost between 120 to 150 rs per person this may be one the best option to chk out mumbai especially if it is your first time in mumbai....
ofcourse one of the best places in mumbai is the elephanta caves but that is a half day trip in itself where you can book the tickets in front of the gateway of india

Around 5 oclock, go stand at the entrance of Victoria Station and watch thousands of people going about there business. This should be done after visiting Elephanta island. Just the boat trip is worth it to see Bombay from the water. The temples are alson fascinating.

start in the morning with a cooling walk around the Gateway of India.grab a few yummy baked items from the Taj Hotel nearby.next, board a ferry-boat and make a beeline for the exciting Elephanta Caves.after enjoying the mysteries of Elephanta and grabbing a quick lunch, head back to Gateway.the next couple of hours can be spent in the Prince of Wales Museum or the Jahangir Art Gallery.after that i guess u'll be too tired to roam around-so relax on one of the many beaches with lots of tender coconut-water !
