What to expect in India?

I am going to India for the first time. I've been told the good(it's beautiful) and bad(you can easily get sick). So I'd like to hear experiences from recent travelers to the country.

As told by others, there are both good and bad things in India. U can really enjoy ur visit to India. It is a beautiful place. THe best thing would b the food. The vegetables used are fresh and not the frozen ones and every meal is prepared then and there..hot..hot and not like keeping it in fridge and then re-heating it. However, as a foreigner, u mite not b able to eat the hot and spicy stuffs initially..The good things are as my frens said the beaches, hospitality of the people, the sunny days, artistic stuffs, temples, liveliness, yoga, ayurveda and all natural stuffs and ofcourse everything is damn cheap when u spend in dollars for the Indian stuffs!!

the bad things mite b the pollution, weather, the ques, the bribe, robbery etc etc.

Next visit :

Finally visit :

This will give a picture of India, through a foreign visitors' eyes.
But, NOTHING can really prepare you for what you will ultimately experience during your visit - as India has its very unique and totally personal ways of touching each individual visitor's heart !

As you said you have been told the good and the bad, both the things are true.. India is very beautiful.. There is so much diversity here.. You can experiences all kinds of climes . There are cool hill stations, beaches, Historical Places, Deserts, Animal Sanctuaries etc etc...
But for foreigners things used to be a bit difficult. But now the Ministry of Tourism in India is actively involved in the welfare of foreign tourists.. They have taken steps to make sure that their motto "Atithi Devo Bhava" is followed, which means "Guest is God"....
You should contact a good travel agency and arrange for a guide..... It would be better to ask you to follow the guidelines given by youe embassy in India instead of listing all the dos and donts...
The bottom line is that if you are alert and careful, you can have a really good time in India. And as for getting sick, foreigners are not used to the spices used in the here, but if you give time, your stomach adjusts, teh food is really good, eat at good retaurants only and drink mineral water, you'll be fine....

trully depends when and where ur going.
But in general, cool place
It has everything to provide for the citizen of the world
Even if you fall ill, you will get free medical treatment better than most of the world gets in their countries.
Just shed the fear and travel with abundance

Depends on what country you are coming from, and where you have travelled before.

But I would say be prepared for:

Smell, dirt, poverty, thieves, robbers, crazy driving, waiting, and a bunch of other stuff.

If you drink water that isn't from a bottle, make sure it has been boiled properly, if you can stick your finger in it and keep it there then send it back, they might not understand why you want it boiled "ubla", but you must persist, if you want to be sure not to get sick. bottled water is usually fine just check the cap before buying it.

Take care

if you are coming for holidays then India is like heaven beautiful people, places, food, culture and many more but if you are coming for the rest of your life then its not easy as it seems on holidays.

Expect long queues, lot of staring by the locals, glaring sun, amazing hospitality, irritating bureacracy, Mercedes next to a bullock cart on the roads of metros, bribing from ticket checkers to police to priests. This is a land of contradictions, pluralism rules here. Enjoy. :-)
