are u a male?
If you are a tourist, male or female then -
For BOTH - Have a loose trouser and shirt/ t shirt even a jean should be fine. see they are cotton or alike to give you ease in the hot climate.
If you are in northern parts, or hill stations, then consider carring a light woolen or a jacket.
At times shorts are okay when you are not moving around.
For females - do not try, if you are okay with above, bring them, and you can buy a salvar kamis after arriving in India - should be 10-15 euros for good stuff.
If its a business trip, then formals, minis, are fine. |

shorts are okay - if ur a guy - no issue at all, if ur female, dont wear very short shorts. shorts are not permitted in places of worship (in most oarts of the world),
if ur a female dont show too much skin - some places like touristy places are fine, but on the streets, walking in very short shorts and strappy tops are not the best options

A lot of foreigners wear shorts when in India. Although i doubt many Indians (women) would step out of their houses wearing shorts. But its perfectly normal for foreigners to wear them. If you are a guy you have nothing to worry about, if you are a lady, you might invite some unwanted stares thats all.
Like anywhere else in the world, jeans is the normal clothing of youths in India. you can also wear lose cotton or linen pants in extreme summers. The summer months are from april-july. |

better avoid shorts on roads if you dont want road side bihari's( the uneducated and lower social lot men) to pass leechy looks at you LOL but you can wear shorts etc at house, hotel.restaraunts and high profile places- there is no taboo as such
calve lengths, knee length or longer skirts , cotton salwars and kurtis , capris, harem pants etc are comfy , very commonly worn and easily available options |

Actually shorts are acceptable.....People like to stereotype India as being in the stone ages....Last time I was there in New Delhi I saw jeans more than I saw Indian clothes..... |

Shorts are acceptable there because they will automatically know that you're an outsider. If, however, you feel awkward doing so . . look into their traditional clothing. It's actually pretty comfortable & easy to wear. The salwaar kameez over the sari (: Have fun! |

Indians don't wear too short and skimpy clothes even in hot summer. I would suggest you(if you r a woman) not to wear any skimpy clothes. You can buy some local lose cotton clothes and try them. Indian men tend yo stare at popped out boobs and naked legs. I've seen many tourists wearing comfortable shorts though. |

India is not hot and humid in all places. the northern region of India is very cold. it depends on where you are going. If you want to make a good impression wear indian clothes, like a saree. it is comfortable in this hot weather and it's the traditional dress of India. But managing a saree is quite difficult, you can try wearing a salwar, which is also acceptable. If you don't want to wear Indian clothes, then stick to a long skirt. shorts and minis are not acceptable in almost all parts of India and I've heard people on the road muttering about your clothes as you pass. You might look a bit odd in Indian clothes if you are a blonde though, and that will make people stare even more. try coloring your hair. |
