Rajiv Gandhi was a professional pilot for Indian Airlines before entering politics. While at Cambridge, he met Italian-born Sonia Maino who he later married. It was following his younger brother's death in 1980 that Rajiv was pressured by Indian National Congress party politicians and his mother to enter politics. Rajiv and his wife were both opposed to the idea, and Rajiv even publicly stated that he would not contest for his brother's seat, but he finally accepted his mother's urging and announced his candidacy for Parliament[citation needed]. His entry was criticized by many in the press, public and opposition political parties, who saw the role of Nehru's dynasty intensifying in Indian politics.

Elected for Sanjay's Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituency of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh state in February 1981, Rajiv became an important political advisor to his mother. It was widely perceived that Indira Gandhi was grooming Rajiv for the prime minister's job, and Rajiv soon became the president of the Youth Congress - the Congress party's youth wing.

He quit his pilot job after Sanjay's death with the intention of helping out his mother, despite the remonstration from his wife, Sonia Gandhi. In the party, he was inducted as one of its General Secretaries. He was made fun of for his naive style of speech in Hindu. His 'hamai dekhana hi ki' kind of speech was the butt of ridicule among the knowledgeable circle. After the assassination of Mrs Gandhi, he was the natural choice. As a young and dynamic leader, he showed a lot of promise. In solving the Punjab issue, he showed a lot of courage and dynamism. The Rajiv and Longowal accord, brokered by Arjun Singh was a courageous one. This accord cost Longowal his life. There was another accord signed by the SriLankan government and the LTTE under the aegis of Rajiv's government, which was also considered as a bold step in his regime and it later turned out to be nemesis for Rajiv as the LTTEs nurtured a grouse against him for foisting on them an accord which they were not happy with.
