India was the richest civilization 2000 years back when much of the other world was developing. Americas was inhabited by various tribes. The wheel of Time continues to turn and whatever goes away, comes back around. They've had only 60 years of independence and they are doing far better than countries in that same category (look at their neighbors). They'll be doing great in the future.
As for the person to make comments about the sanitary conditions and hoping they'll be nuked, I would advise him to worry about his job first.

i think that we will take in some of their pop culture now (superficially from out experience with slumdog)
i think china, if it gets its act together, could quite possibly be the next superpower, however india has enough people and a strong culture of its own it could begin to export

Well from documentaries I have seen on the country I am going to guess some sort of plague. The sanitary system to the amount of people is flat out disgusting. Either that or they will probably get nuked.
