Hi,
I spent a bit of time in India and from what I experienced.....
A Bindi : .....A bindi (Hindi: बिंदी meaning "dot") is a forehead decoration. Traditionally it is a dot of red color applied in the center of the forehead close to the eyebrows, but it can also consist of a sign or piece of jewelry worn at this location.
Traditionally, married Hindu women wear a bindi. The traditional bindi is made with red sindoor powder or perhaps a black ointment. The bindi is a form of tilak, religious Hindu signs worn on the forehead. Nowadays, bindis are also worn by women who are not married, children, and by women who are not Hindu.
A Tilak: ....Is a signifying mark (usually symbolic) for example of a religious nature. In Hinduism, the tilaka (Sanskrit tilaka) is a mark worn on the forehead and other parts of the body. It is commonly seen between the parting of the hair on a married women, and on the forehead of Hindus. Tilaka may be worn on a daily basis or for special religious occasions only, depending on different customs, with many women opting for the coloured stick on varieties.
Worn by a priest, ascetic, or worshiper it shows which Hindu tradition he follows. It may be made with sandalwood paste, ashes (vibhuti), kumkum, sindhoor, clay, or another substance. The pastes are applied to the forehead and in some cases to the upper part of the head.
Hope this helps as they are very different. |
