KITE FESTIVAL GUJRAT-

As millions of kite enthusiasts pitch themselves at the rooftops, waves of flying kites overwhelm an otherwise deep blue sky. On January 14, watch the sky change colors... like a rainbow in a glittering sun after the rain and bask in the glory of Uttarayan, when the skies of Gujarat give way to colorful kites. Uttarayan (known as Makar Sakranti in other parts of India) is the day when the sun starts to travel northwards marking the decline of winter.

In Gujarat, Uttarayan is a holiday when every family can be met outdoors. People of all ages fly kites from dawn to dusk. Crowded rooftops, fun-loving rivalry to outdo each other in kite flying skills and delicious traditional Gujarati feast are the hallmarks of the day. -

The kite flying festival is a favorite festival for Gujaratis. In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, the International Kite Flying festival is organized every year. People all over the world bring their unique designed kites and fly them on the sky. Besides this, Ahmedabad has a kite museum located in Paldi area. I dont know if it is international or not but the kite festival is celebrated on the 14th/15th of January every year wn the sun starts to travel the northward path , known as the 'Uttarayan'.

It begins on one of the most auspicious day, namely 14 Jan. 14 jan also marks the end of the inauspicious period between 15 Dec to 14 Jan known by Gujarati as "kamorta".

When they tell you to `go fly a kiteâ€™ in Gujarat, they actually mean it. And in January, that means sharing the sky with thousands of other kites.
Coinciding with the Makar Sankranti celebrations, Gujaratâ€™s International Kite Festival is held every year in Ahmedabad. As youâ€™ve probably guessed, this is one day when the skies above the city come alive with kites- in a hundred different colours, shapes and sizes, fluttering and darting above the rooftops, triumphantly cutting another kiteâ€™s string, and soaring way up above the earth. The Gujarat Tourism Development Corporation organises the International Kite Festival at a local stadium, where kite enthusiasts from all across the world show off their skills. A kite market is held, alongside which are food stalls, cultural performances and special kite displays at night, when illuminated kites- known as tukals- are flown.
