It is never going to be a metro city for another 20 years. There are many more cities like Ahmedabad, Indore, Jaipur etc which are still looking for that stage. Bhopal is still under developed as far as infrastructure, civic sense, power problems, poeple lacking awareness like saving water and electricity, etc etc. So dear, just forget that Bhopal will ever become a metro city |

ON THE 20th anniversary of the Bhopal tragedy, NatureQuest is organising a programme, where Nityanand Jayaraman, journalist, activist and member of the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal, will launch the book "The Bhopal Saga" by Dr. Ingrid Eckerman, member of the International Medical Commission on Bhopal. The book deals with the causes and consequences of the world's largest industrial disaster.
On the night of December 2-3, 1984, 43 tonnes of methylisocyanate (MIC) and other substances leaked from the Union Carbide factory into the Bhopal city. Around 520,000 people were exposed to the poisonous gas. Up to 10,000 people are said to have died as a result of the leak. The Bhopal experience has become a symbol of industrial negligence on essential safety measures.
The programme will also feature songs by Paul Jacob from his protest album "No More Bhopals". Dr. Pughazhendi will speak on the effects of effluents on the villages around the Kalpakkam nuclear reactor and a short film on the effect of the SIPCOT Industrial Estate in Cuddalore will be screened.
The event will take place on December 3, 6.30 p.m. at the Bookpoint Auditorium, 160, Anna Salai.
The book will be available at a special price of Rs. 200 at the launch.
