A family friend of ours is getting married in India in June, and we're going...we live in Thailand, so it's not quite so big a deal as it would be coming from the States. ;-) What I'm ...
It should be near by Kolkata. Trip would be of one ...

Where best to exchange for indian rupees?
I'm traveling to India in a few weeks.. I am wondering where I can get the best exchange rates-at the airports or on ground here in the US or in India itself.. I'd request replies from those who travel a lot only, thanks.
In any standard bank, preferably in State Bank of India.

Small authorised Forex dealers found on almost all main roads and shopping malls in big Indian cities offer a Rupee or two more than the State Bank of India. Best is to change your Dollar notes with them in Chennai, Delhi or Mumbai. The bigger the denomination, the better the rate.

Exchanging at the State Bank of India or other exchange counter in India will be better.

The Indian Rupee is a closed currency so you shouldn't be able to buy it in the US, and if you can the rate will be awful.
Like in most of the world the worst place are airports as the rates are very low.
If you have a bank account in India you can transfer money but the rate isn't as good as the small exchange rate shops
If you are going to a Tourist area (such as Goa) you will find a great deal of competition in small exchange rate dealers who will often change money as a sideline (i.e have a shop selling shoes, jewellery.... but also exchange money), but shop around and ask a few. Generally they prefer bigger notes ie 100 dollar bills,
If you are staying in big expensive hotels then they often quote room rates in USD. Finally if you are changing 1000 USD and can find a place that pays 1 more rupee than the bank (for example) its only equivalent to an extra 20 USD

I do travel regularly and find that the ones who exchange at airports are ones who need cash instantly or have spare amount with them
If you are from India then transfer your money through remittances to your own account this is the best way since it gives optimum rate
if not
exchange before you travel preferably from US use Thomas cook or travelex
