whether you call it bungee, bungy, le benji or suicide practice, bungee jumping has arrived. and the place to go in hyderabad is the freedom zone at necklace road, which is a part of the great mall of hyderabad. take a stroll inside and you can see the great yellow crane hoisting people up on a platform. if you are thinking 'how does it feel?' here are a couple of first person accounts: "as you climb over the guard rail, which is more than 120 ft high, you feel your heart pounding. there's a rope tied to your feet and your head knows that to jump off is madness, your heart tells you to go for it. and then the count down begins. the toughest part is getting your feet off that platform. you plunge and the cord slows down your fall. as you breathe a sigh of relief, the tensile cords immediately propel you upward at lightning speed. you curse under your breath as you defy gravity and then plunge downwards again. after 4 or 5 bounces you dangle from the platform. the crane lowers you to the ground. congratulations! you have just experienced an 'airgasm,'" says nimisha reddy, who has jumped many times over the last three days. "on the first day, three girls jumped one after the other. the number of girls who are volunteering for the jump are increasing by the day," adds arun sajwan, the bungee master, a veteran of 300 such jumps. the note of respect in his voice is obvious. don't people get scared? "oh, yeah! if i wasn't scared i wouldn't get that adrenaline rush and what fun would that be? after one jump however, i could jump all day and just enjoy the flight. fear is good. it keeps you from doing stupid things. courage is not the lack of fear, it's the conquering of it," says arjun, another bungee enthusiast. bungee has a history to it. legend has it that indigenous people of the penecoste islands in the south pacific have jumped off of bamboo towers with vines tied to their legs for thousands of years. the modern version of the sport was started in 1978 by england's oxford dangerous sports club. when a j hackett made his famous jump from the eiffel tower in june 1987, bungee jumping, as we know it today, was born. the freedom zone is open from 3.00 in the afternoon. if you have any more questions, here's what the bungee master will say to you. just shut up and jump!
