it depends on the time of year...
if you haven't been to india before, you could use delhi as a base, and then go over to Rajastan to Jaisalmer, Jaipur and Jodphur; leave a day to get a train to Agra to see the Taj.
Alternatively, head to Kerala to go on a Backwaters boat and then head to the beaches.
Mumbai is a great city and a good base - can get to Goa and also to the hill stations for some walking
whatever you choose, you will have a great time - and try and eat as much South Indian food as you can - and try and eat on the street as much as possible for the freshest tastiest and cheapest meals |

If you are visiting India for the first time and want to get a flavour of Indian culture, you really cannot look at being 'based' in one place. For that matter, 2 weeks maybe too short also. But you could come in via Delhi, move on to Rajasthan, further down south to Karnataka and Kerala before flying out from Mumbai. For more details on each of the above destinations and accommodation options there, you could check out the following links:

Having recently travelled to India, I would recommend going on a tour, definitely incorporating the Taj Mahal (Agra), Jaipur and Udaipur + go on tiger safari at Ranthambhore. The best way of doing this is through an Indian Travel Agent - you can find these on the internet and they are much cheaper than going through your own travel agent. Just make sure you use a reputable one. It is quite an eye-opener though when you visit India as there is a lot of poverty and it can be quite upsetting. |
