Bombay was originally named Mumbai but when the British ruled the sub-continent, they changed several names for easier pronunciation. The Brits were booted out in '48 and eventually Bombay went back to Mumbai. Similarly, Kolkatta became Calcutta and back again. In Russia during the Communist era, St. Petersburg was renamed Leningrad (or was it Stalingrad?) after one of these "great" leaders. It is now back to St. Petersburg. And of course, Kampuchea is now Cambodia -- for easier pronunciation.

In India, however, it is not called Bombay anymore. If you need more information, check out this site
