Ranipet is a town in Vellore District of Tamil Nadu state in southern India. It is a medium-sized community located about 100 kilometers from Chennai, the fourth largest urban area in India. It is a main junction in the Chennai-Bangalore road. It is an example of serious groundwater pollution by heavy metals.[1]
The town is flanked by Arcot, Walajapettai, and Katapdi on three sides. The major schools are DAV BHEL Hr. Sec school, Sri Ramakrishna BHEL school, and Little Flower Convent.
There are a number of small scale industries in Ranipet. These industries are mostly engaged in chemical, leather and tool making. These industries are the major lifeline for otherwise dry, uncultivatable land. The Boiler Auxiliaries Plant (BAP) of BHEL [Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited], a major Federal Government owned enterprise is situated in the town.
Yet another landmark would be the Vellore Institute of Technology(VIT).
