You should try out Jaipur and the surrounding places. They have a lot of history and color with grand palaces. You should take the train Palace on wheels, its quite an experience .Goa is fun too.http://www.palaceonwheels.net/new/home.htm

depends on the cash and what you want.
if you want a spectacular sight that you will remember for all your days then go to Agra and see the Taj Mahal, but its a bit boring once you,ve spent all day there.
otherwise like the previous answer go to Goa.
it,s guaranteed heat and it does.nt rain 24/7
it,s mainly at night with a few heavy showers during the day but even then there are clear days with no rain at all.
its cheap, very cheap and regardless of recent troubles its very, very friendly

It will be pouring with rain in Goa, the sea will be far too rough to go in and very little even open. Delhi, Rajasthan, Agra, Varanasi etc unbearably hot. The best thing is to head up into the mountains. You can get flights from Delhi to Leh in August and it is fabulous there. Explore the foothills of the Himalayas!

Of course it depends why you want to go to India?
If you want to relax and do little Goa is ideal. If you want to see some architecture and historical sites, Bombay, Delhi, Amritsa.

I was here in a the monsoon, you will get wet but as long as you are prepeared it can be good fun

I'm off to Ladak- Leh - this is the ideal time to visit, and perhaps Kashmir if all is well with India Pakistan relationships.

Alternatively- Darjeeling and Sikkim at the other end of the Himalayas - beautiful places to visit and trek.

Good luck.

august is a very good time to visit the north part of india
so you can make a trip in Himachal pradesh,up to Manali then you can choose to go through Rothang pass still open around 4000 mt. high and go in Ladah even if you not scare you can go in Kashmir...anywhere...the only part o india to avoid for the rain is est bengala, part of central india and the south..it will rain until october
