Kerala is a beautiful part of India, lush and green with a magnificent coastline. Despite its small size, Kerala is one of the more prosperous of India's states with near 100% literacy rate and the lowest infant mortality rate in the country. Inland the many rivers make boats a preferred, and sometimes the only, method of travel in many places and for many tourists, taking a boat trip is the highlight of their trip. Coasting along serene, palm-shaded waterways while rural life carries on in and alongside certainly beats an Indian bus! The capital Thiruvananthapuram, must be one of the quietest cities in the country and very close to Kovolam, the most popular beach in the state. Kovolam has a superb beach and I loved it there, although the waves can sometimes be dangerous (but a hell of a lot of fun if you like body surfing and are a strong swimmer). However in recent years it has become a little too developed for many, with the quieter Varkala beach coming in vogue. Actually, wherever you are in the state, you're never really far from the coast and if you find even Varkala too popular then just take a bus to a beach not in the guide books. Apart from the excellent beaches of Kovolam and Varkala and the river trip I took, I found Cochin a very pleasant place to stay and the laid back atmosphere really to my liking. As long as you're not looking for excitement, its a nice enough place to rest up for a couple of days with a sight or two of its own including these really weird Chinese fishing nets which have to be seen rather than explained. I might also have enjoyed Bekel if I hadn't spent most of my time there nailed to the toilet seat- what I did see though seemed very nice! |

To go in Kerala is very difficult as Kerala has a lot of places in its borders - start from Goa and move southwards by the ocean-banks till Kanyakumari and turn left over the Eastern Moundains - eastern borders of Idukki, Munnar, Anamudi, Palaghat, Waynad and you can not end up - such marvellous unique places are there in Kerala - |
