The name of the state is derived from GujjarÄtta (Gurjar RÄshtra), which means the land of the Gujjars. It is believed that a tribe of Gujjars migrated to India around the 5th century. Gujarat's coastal cities, chiefly Bharuch, served as ports and trading centres for the Maurya and Gupta empires. After the collapse of the Gupta empire in the 6th century, Gujarat flourished as an independent Hindu kingdom. The Maitraka dynasty, descended from a Gupta general, ruled from the 6th to the 8th centuries from their capital at Vallabhi, although they were ruled briefly by Harsha during the 7th century. In 775 the first Parsi (Zoroastrian) refugees arrived in Gujarat from Iran. The Arab rulers of Sind sacked Vallabhi in 770, bringing the Maitraka dynasty to an end. A branch of the Pratihara clan ruled Gujarat after the eighth century

living in gujarat since the last 11 years and am loving it.
please do not believe a certain so called upholder of truth newspaper's reports about a certain section of people living in mortal fear of their lives - the fact is there is no tension, the average gujarati guy is not bothered with ur faith as long as he gets a good bargain.
there also relative safety for girls- gujarat will surely be the only place in india where girls dress up for navaratri and go out after 11 o'clock at night!!! speaks volumes about a place's law & order i believe.places like baroda ,anand, nadiad, ahemdabad all r really cool with good amenities.

if u mean for travel & tourism, Himachal Pradesh (Shimla, Kullu, Manali) & Uttranchal are the best Hilly places. Kashmir has the best valley but not absolutely safe. If u like plains, Kerala scores high because of its natural serenity and naturopathies.
