Coimbatore is better than Madurai in terms of city life .Madurai is a pilgrim place where famous Minakshi temple is there .Since you have not mentioned your actual need it is very dificult to answer but I am sure Coimbatore is far better .80 km from the city is the famous hill resort OOTY

Since I spent most of my schooling in Coimbatore, I will opt for the same. However it definitely has pleasant qualities. Being the Manchester of South India, the industrial king pin of the south, creating new base for the IT indiustries also proves it the best of its kind. The educational institutions, more diplomatic and considerably well organized community, well known theme parks, budget and extravaganza shopping malls, cine theatres, best of the kind hospitals, not discouraing politics and so on. Although a couple of arrogant attacks based on religion politics, shaded the city's cultural outcomes, Coimbatore still had its own stamp in proving the second best in Tamil Nadu.
