Dear Friend
Best in this season will be Munnar in Kerala,
Kodaikanal & Ootty in Tamil Nadu.
The Monsoon is weak now, so you may able to grab the full beauty of Munnar, Thekkady, Devikulam of Kerala.
Best of Luck and Happy Journey

hey of course it is munar which approx 4 hours drive from Kochin and is placed a top of western ghats . It is virgin and untouched with beautiful scenery and tea estates. Natural look and helpful nature of ppl you will find it more than that of hill station.

Kullu Manali or Shimla Dharamshala would be the best hill station to visit in August. |

There are two things you didn't mention - Which part of India and How much time you have in your hands.
In North India, August is the best time to visit Valley of Flowers ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_of_Flowers_National_Park ). You would need a week for this.
Other option if you aren't scared is to visit the Kashmir Valley ( http://www.mustseeindia.com/Srinagar ), believe me, nothing is more beautiful than this.
Another great place is Mcleodganj (Upper Dharamsala), though you are bound to get wet there. I would recommend it for a weekend trip.
In South India, Munnar is nice.
Some other good hill stations are listed here http://www.mustseeindia.com/top-10-hill-stations-india |

i'd say mussoorie.. anyday.. i've been in the monsoons too.. and its heavenly.. unless u hate the rains.. its a lovely place.. goes ethereally green at that time.. if ur driving do make sure u reach before they close the mall road to traffic.. u cud stay at a number of good hotels like avalon resorts or kasmanda palace which is a lovely heritage hotel or even connaught castle which is just off the mall road.. if u do go make sure u do the walk, albeit a bit steep, upto landour and sister bazaar for some of the best peanut butter in the world.. |
