Sorry the rest all got it wrong!
If you are going to Kashmir you MUST stay on a houseboat on Dal Lake. You can rent a Donga (a small boat for one person or a family). The more you pay the better will be your food. Drink only bottled water! Don't let them boil it..you have to see it being boiled. Right next to the Large Houseboat Manhattan is a small Donga (Dongu?) owed and operated by a wonderful family. I stayed there 5 weeks in 1989! It's directly across from the main road with all the shops. Then all the vendor will come up to you boat in shikaras (traditional Kashmir small boats) and offer you anything your little heart might desire....Time Magazine (no problem). Now you must rent your own shakara (learn how to paddle from one side) and go roaming around the lake. At night it's like 'Pirates of the Caribbian', only real.
That's the one and only way to stay in Shrinagar....Period...
I don''t care if you can afford the Ritz...you would be a fool not to stay on the lake!
Have a blast (and paddle that boat from one side like the American Indians did..takes 10 minutes to learn if you do not already know)
