Linked by air to Delhi, Chandigarh, Kangra and Kullu. The airport at Jubbarhati is 23 km from Shimla.

Rail
It is linked by a narrow gauge line to Kalka which is connected to Delhi, Calcutta and Amritsar by broad gauge. Kalka-Shimla in 96 km and 6 hours by train but only 4 hours by a quaint rail car.

Road
Shimla is well connected by road to most towns within the state and to all major towns in Punjab and Haryana. It is linked by bus and coach to Delhi and Chandigarh as well. Delhi is 370 km away, Chandigarh 117 km, Kalka 90 km and Ambala 166 km. Within the state, Narakanda is 64 km away, Mandi 156 km, Kullu 240 km, Manali 280 km and Dharmashala 280 km.

Shimla is totally Commercialized. But even then it has its beauty.There are some wonderful places like Kufri, Naldhera etc. which are half day excursions but very beautiful places. As you descend from Shimla by road you are amidst some most beautiful valley scenes I 've ever seen. Chail and Barog are good places to spend a night.

Kullu Manali are simply too beautiful. Manali especially. with the river Beas gushing down its valleys. And there are some out of the world excursion places to visit like Manikaran, Nagar, Rohtang Pass/Marhi (depending on how much roads have been cleared of frost) etc.

Between the two I'll definitely go for Manali.

Besides the above Himachall has other very beautifull places like McLoedganj, Dalhousie, Jogindarnagar, Chamba, Jwalaji etc. to see. If you take this circuit follw down to Nangal and Bakhra the Bhakr Nangal project is also worth seeing.

It will be too cold this time but opt for shimla, its a lovely place to be in with snow falls and other things.

Go Shimla for snow in Chail , but to enjoy different snow games go to Manali ........Come to Delhi and get Delux buses to Shimla and Manali or by train to Chandigarh and from Chandigarh get Taxi its costly.

If you want to enjoy shimla the way you want, going solo is the best option. Try to book your hotel near Kufri at least for one day and the rest book it nearest to the Mall Road...

Shimla is well connected to delhi where there are many travel operators, but my suggestion to you is to go by the government run VOLVO bus by the Himachal Government, where they have the most expert drivers to drive on the hilly terrain.

Delhi to Shimla is a 9-10 hr Journey by bus.

There is another option by train. Delhi - Kalka by train and Kalka to Shimla by Toy Train, which i think which you should try in your return journey..

Fascination on mall road is a good eating joint. You can visit Kufri, Chail, Narkanda and Nadhera by cabs which are available just outside Combermere, near the lift. Baljees recency is quite a walk from the mall and is close to victory tunnel( not a happening place). Peterhoff has the best scenic beauty around it. Rest are very commercial. Have a great trip.

Visit Shimla. You can book railway ticket upt Kalka and from there it 3 hours journey in bus or 5 hours journey in narrow gauze train.
