Pune is the station near to the hill station. Satara rd and Mahad are also stations from which u can go to M'war. Depends on how and what exactly uw ill be taking up.

There is actually no station close to Mahabaleshwar.It is better to take a direct bus.However if you want to go by train PUNE will be your best bet.

If travelling from Mumbai, your best shot is Pune. From Pune, take bus to Mahabaleshwar. You can travel to Satara too ( check out the trains to Bangalore)Satara is 30 kms away from your destination.
