The Ganges River is a river of northern India and Bangladesh. The river has a long history of reverence in India and is worshipped by Hindus as a goddess. Its often called the 'holy Ganga'.

The total length of the river is about 2,510 km (1,557 mi). Along with another river Yamuna, it forms a large and fertile basin, known as the Gangetic plains, stretching across north India and Bangladesh, and supports one of the highest densities of human population in the world. Indeed, about one in every 12 people on earth (8.5% of world population) live in its catchment area. Due to this incredible concentration of population, pollution and the destruction of habitats is a matter of serious concern.

Actually, Brahmaputra is the longest river flowing through India (2700 kms), but since it has its origin in Tibet (where it is known as Tsangpo), it cannot really be called an Indian river.

The river begins high in the Himalayas as a pair of head streams. It begins in an ice cave in the mountains about 10,300 feet above sea level. The river flows across the northern corner of India. The Ganges flows across India and Bangladesh until it empties out into the Bay of Bengal. The great river provides water to many places, and many places rely on it.

The longest river in India is river GANGES. it flows from the foot hills of himalayas in himachal pradesh and mixes the Bay of bengal in Bangladesh.This place is called Sunderbans.The length of River Ganges is about 2300 Kms.
