I have been to quite a few Hill stations and Personally i found ooty to quite boring.
Shimla wins hand down.
But, there are other hills stations in South India like Kodai, Munnar & Coorg which are very good and haven't been spoiled as yet. |

Depends whether you are going from and how far you are willing to travel. Shimla is closer to the Delhi gateway and Ooty is closer for people going from Mumbai southwards. Travel connections, Coimbatore airport is a much more convenient connection closer to Ooty than say Chandigarh airport is to Shimla. Altitude wise, Ooty is slightly higher than Shimla but being at a very low latitude, there is no snow in Ooty whereas Shimla is snow covered in winter. Both places are equally touristy and commercial in peak tourist season, and to be avoided like the plague at those times. From Ooty you can explore the unique biosphere of the Nilgiri ranges, and from Shimla, I suppose you could explore the best of Himachal. Ive been to both places and personally I prefer Ooty or rather the Nilgiris district, locals and shopkeepers in Ooty are so much more pleasant and courteous, there is an assuring element of safety that you do not feel in North India. This is perhaps more noticeable by non-North Indians like me. From a nature lovers perspective the biodiversity of the Nilgiri area is much more than in the Himalayas, but that of course is my personal opinion. If you are just looking for a regular tourist holiday, Im sure both places would be good. BTW the dhabas in and around Shimla serve super food. |

In Shimla there is a place called Kufri. This is d place wher u cn c snow. the way 2 Kufri is really steep n u hav 32 take a horse. Its really very boring travelling by a horse most of which is in a very pathetic condition. Ooty is very very pleasant wid good hotels, restaurants etc. On d whole Ooty ROCKS!! |

Both the places are very crowded and commercialised these days. Go to Kodaikanal which is a beautiful hill station near madurai. the climate is very good although you cant see snow here. Its very nice with those pine trees, Star shaped lake and home made chocolates. Its a must place to visit. Give it a shot..........! I am sure you will enjoy it..........! |

Ooty any day. Shimla has become crowded and intolerable. However, if you are looking for further uphill then you can start with Shimla, to Chail and may be even Mandi, Kullu and Manali. |
