This is a very controversial question as there have been many freedom fighters and it is difficult to select one as the best aspeople have different view points to consider who was best.
However, I consider Mahatma Gandhi as the best freedom fighter.

hey how can i be so mean to rate the freedom fighters .....they were all great and courageous who laid their lives for a meaningful purpose.....i am nobody to rate who was the best or worst.....THEY WERE ALL IMMORTAL AND BRAVE......

My dear your question is wrong. All were best. Those who had lost there life and could not saw the freedom they were best because of them we won the freedom. It was not only Mahatma, Nehru,Azad, Shubhash, Bhagat. But millions of unsung hero's were best.

It was Mangal Pandey. Because he was the one who initiated an agitation against the British for the first time and shown others that we can put up a fight against them. He was the trigger and the others followed his path. So the first one is the best one.

I feel it is Mahatma Gandhi, because he gave freedom without violence. Moreover, he not fought for freedom and won it for India, but for South Africa as well.

I am not sure what time frame you are referring to, but during the mogul rule I would say Shivaji was the best in every way as a freedom fighter. As for the more recent Indian independence movement during the British rule, I don't think that there is a single best freedom fighter. The most prominent of them would be Mahatma Gandhi, but my favorite is Sardar Patel, Iron man of India.
