They're trying to remove vestiges of Bristish influence by spelling it in a way that is less anglanized and more along the lines of the way it would be spelled in the Indian language. |

calcutta-..the name is so british...named in british period.....always made people remind of british raj.
whereas
kolkata-(it contains 'O'.........sounds very much bengali)...made people people feel more compfortable.
people thought the name should reflect their unique identity....

When British landed on Indian soil near Kolkata; they asked a person about name of the place but the local one unknown about English answered as if they were asking about time of the harvesting. So, the local one replied in Bengali as KOLKATA. Which was difficult for Englishmen to pronounce, so they pronounced as Calcutta. Now to gain Indian essence back they changed name to Kolkata. |

It is a game plan of politicians who want to befool the public. Name change cannot bring in mind set and it has been proved many a times. Baroda to Vadodara, Poona to Pune, Bombay to Mumbai , Madras to Chennai etc etc. Nothing has changed in these cities. It is the work which is done by politicians which matters and they are busy in achieving their own aims of earning money by hook or by crook. |

there is a Beautiful story about calcutta..
one british lord asked a farmer what is the name of this city..
the farmer thought that the lord was asking about his grass...
he answerd kaal kata means i have cut it yester day.
the lord named this city calcutta but the real name was kolikata...
we the bengali don't want that name. so the government of CPIM and chief minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya understood and due to some political reason the govt soopn changed the name... |

Nowadays when referred to as Kolkata, it usually includes the suburbs, whereas Calcutta is usually regarded as the central area of the city.
Calcutta was actually the capital of India during the period of the British Raj until 1911. The city's name was always pronounced "Kolkata" in the local Bengali language but the official English name was only changed from Calcutta to Kolkata in 2001. This reflected the Bengali pronunciation and was seen by some as a move to erase the legacy of British rule.

Kali Ghat, which means the abode of Goddess Kali is the name of the village on the banks. Ghat also means "Bank on the river". It also means on the Banks of Kali.
As the British found it difficult, they called it as Calcutta.
The orginal name is restored. |
