The name India comes from the River Indus, which was called Sindhu by the ethnic Indians. If I remember correctly, all the invaders, be it Alexander or Mughuls had to cross this river before they entered India. So they called the persons living across this river as Indians (ones living across Indus)
In fact the name Indus was coined by the Greeks at the time of Alexander's invasion. This name became widely used in Europe and hence the name in English.
The invaders from middle east called the country Hindustan (meaning the place of Hindus). Hindu again is derived from Sindhu. |

the british people called India as India when they occupied the subcontinent in the 18th century.
bharat is the official name of india. when you go to india, they will speak of bharat, meaning they call their country as bharat.
well, india came from the name of indus river, maybe it has somehow influenced by the presence of indus civilization ruins. maybe british was so awestruck by this magnificent structures, so much that they get addicted with indus so they finally called the area indus. maybe indus is much roman in name (consider the terminal -us), so they changed -us to -a, thus indus became india.
maybe because of indic culture. maybe the british, when they arrived on south asia, they met emperors that are of Indic culture, so they tend to called them India (indic, may they believed that the people call them indic since that's they're culture. ) |

The English term India is from Greek "Hindía" , via Latin India.
Hindía denotes the region beyond the Indus river, taken from Avestan "Hinduš" (referring to Sindh, and listed as a conquered territory by Darius I in the Persepolis terrace inscription).
The name is derived ultimately from "Sindhu", the Sanskrit name of the river, but also meaning "river" generically. |

All the others have given you enough information about how the name was derived :)
But basically its the name british gave India and made it popular to the rest of the world as they were the ones who had their colonies in lots of countries around the world for a long time. And thats how the name stuck.
But the real name is Bharat.
And our story behind a real name and a more popular name wellknown to the rest of the world is not so different from Burma ( Myanmar ), China (Qin / Zhōngguó ) or Japan (Nippon) etc. |

Because They are Indian so English change the name of the country India because they had hard time to pronounce Bharat. like they did with Banaras, Mumbai, Kolkata,
Now Indian are changing name of there states but they never think the main important is to change the name of there country like before BHARAT,
But I think all Indian who like in USA never call us India we said we are desi or Hindustani or from Bharat or sometimes Bharat.
I hope one day we will change back to Bharat. |
