* Before Shah Jahan choosed Agra, during the earlier Mughal period itself Agra had a significant place in the history. Even though Delhi is the capital of the Mughal emperors, it is not always safe there as it is always under threat of Rajputs, Persians / Afghans and others....
So, they kept their queens and other unofficial things in Agra. |

Red Fort is in Delhi and not Agra. It is not only Agra, but the precise spot where the Taj Mahal stands that was considered the best location for the edifice by its planners, builders and also Shah Jahan. It must have been convenient for transportation of the building materials while the Jamuna in the background provided a soothing and romantic prelude. Agra Cantonment still houses Indian Army garrisons. They are defending India. |

Till the time of Shahjehan, Agra was the capital of mughal empire. There is a red fort in Agra from where they ruled. So, ur first querry is answered.
Agra cantt. is very much there but don't get confused, there r so many other such cantt areas. They are the military basis & not the strategic border points. |

I think its gods judgement & his love attachment towards his wife Mumtaz Mahal which made him to built it in Agra. Shahjahans son Aurangazeb in greed of power he sends
his father shahjahan to Red Fort Quila (jail) - from there he daily watches his wifes memory tajmahal & he dies in Redfort Jail. |

i think shahjahan choose agra to built the tajmahal as it was the only place where the mughals seemed to built their heritages. |
