yes they changed the name because of their culture . they have a diff. language and "calcutta" is a hindi language they speak bengali and "kolkatta" fits better to their language.

There is Maa Kali's temple near the river Hoogly. Because of this temple, the ancient name was Kalighat and then it became Kolkatta over a period of time. Because ofthe pronounciation problem, the British changed it to Calcutta. During their time Pune became Poona, Pudicherry became Pondicherry, etc.

The communist have got a leaf out of Ekta Kapoor success as she names everything with K, so to change the fortune of the city (which is near impossible) they have changed the name to Kolkatta.
