chennai's original name was chennaipatinam. the brits changed it to madras. so of late ppl wanted the brit name out. and chennaipatinam was a ctually a harbor. so the city came to be called chennai

The Indian subcontentent has had many name changes in the past 50 years, i.e. Bombay, Ceylon, Burma, etc. The changes are usually an effort to move away from the English name given when the area was ruled by the British to a local language name.
While it may be understandable, it sure makes life more complicated!
