Ji is right spelled. It is to pay respect to someone. You can say it is equivalent to words Sir or Mr. or Ms. It can be used as a suffix to any word from a person to Almighty.

i never heard ji after hello or goodbye in routine talk.ji is usually added after a persons name to give him regards.

Its part of the culture to respect elders,In Hindi usually they end sentences with "ji" ,if youngsters talking to elders out of respect and also subordinates when talking to their boss or higher rank,if peers you seldom hear that word.

In south India Hindi is second language so you wont hear them saying "ji" unless they speak in Hindi
