India is still a developing country. The main causes for its slow progress are:-
No stable Government at the Centre
Corruption
Poverty
Minimal usage of the Technology
Restrictions laid down by the Governement on Privatisation
Population and Pollution
India is slowing picking up the pace. It needs to currently meet the demands of the people. Cuz of no stable Government this has become highly impossible. For an instance there is an International Airport being built at Bangalore on the outskirts. This construction process has been carried out since last decade if I remember properly. Due to frequent Governement changes, the work is progressing at a snail's pace. So you can imagine, what is happening in the entire country.
We have enough knowledge and infrastructure, but its not used to the maximum extent to make India a superpower.
Also few of the users here have written that India stole their jobs away from US. Well, think again, who wanned to give jobs to India? or rather Outsource it to India and other Countries around the world?? It was the host nation, here the US. So why balme India for it? Ask your own countrymen why are the jobs being outsourced. |

Well, probably coming from an India living in UK you could understand it a bit more.
India, at present, is a land of contradictions. Let's take an example from Mumbai itself.
I'm assuming you were in the townside(as it is popularly called) of mumbai, the South Mumbai. It is THE most Prime location in Mumbai(and in all probability in India). Only the richest people can stay there.
It's amazingly neat, cosmopolitan and advanced. The electronic dustbins, automatic ticket counters etc all in the experimental stage.
I can't say if it's better than LA, coz I havent been to LA.
But if you try travelling in mumbai's trains you'll encounter the other side of Mumbai. They are packed like anything, are in pathetic condition(although they are extremely efficient). You'd have to hang on for dear life coz they are without doors.
Besides the tracks, you'll see a lot slums, people who have migrated to Mumbai from those parts of India where they can't find employment. This is the other picture of India.
The young India is technology savvy, knowledgeable, ambitious, progressive while the old India is still rooted in past struggling with bureaucracy, corruption, red-tape and poverty.
India is producing more english-speaking graduates than US, an absurdly high percentage of doctors and engineers in US are Indians, Indians take up more than 50% of all H1Bs on offer, and there are loads of more facts.
But for now, this progress is still limited to the private sector and the few Urban centres of progress.
The day when it starts spreading out to the other parts, that'll be the day when the world will truly recognise India as a developed nation.
A nation of a billion people, with a glorious history, a world class military and economy, superb scientific achievements can do much better than what it has done till now. But during all those a solid foundation has been laid which is now starting to bear fruits. |

It's just the media, they only show the worse parts of the country and forget the good parts of the country. |

Did you visit the whole country or just 1 city? It's kind of hard to pass judgement about a whole country based on a sample of 1.
India has a lot of issues:
Environmentally wise: deforestation; soil erosion; overgrazing; desertification; air pollution from industrial effluents and vehicle emissions; water pollution from raw sewage and runoff of agricultural pesticides; tap water is not potable throughout the country; huge and growing population is over straining natural resources.
Infant mortality rate of about 55/1000. Which is just as bad as some 3rd world country like Gabon, Senegal or Yemen.
Literacy is at 59%, about the same as Haiti or Ethiopia.
Life expectancy is at 64 years, about the same as East Timor, Bangladesh or Yemen.
I'm sure things will get better with time, but you can't say it's a shining example of modernism. |

I haven't been to India, so I can't comment, but the perception is that it's heavily overpopulated. With any type of overpopulation, there are going to be slums and hungry people in a country, no matter how advanced it is. I'm guessing people look at that and not the advanced cities where they do have technology at a high level. |

Probably because of all the stories you hear about cast systems and stuff like that. |

India is like a mini earth. We have our share of 'nice' and 'ugly' things. So you have seen the positive part but there also exists the negative side. Both live in harmony |

That's because, like China, the cities are advanced but there are hundreds of millions of peasants living in complete poverty in the countryside where there is a total lack of infrastructure and few jobs. |

people only see the rural side of India on television. If you were the US government and you knew that the second largest populated country in the world has nuclear weapons. Would you tell the us public that they were advanced enough to launch a formidable first/counter strike if we ever pissed them off, or would you just let your people go on thinking that India is just some poodunk little country that has no bearing on world affairs |

because much of their population still lives on less then $1 a day and in very rural conditions. China is very advanced as well, except that almost 500 million of them live on less then $2 a day. |

Because of the Caste System.
The Caste suystem is a feature of the Indian Religion, Hinduism. Basically they believe as you journey through life you gain or lose karma based on your actions. If you fail to fulfill your duties in life, you lose karma. If you do "bad" things (defined rigidly in the religion) you lose karma. If you live a good life and follow the rules, and fulfill your duties, you gain karma.
Your total karma from all of your lives is totalled up when you die. Then what you reincarnate as is determined by how much karma you have.
Animals are also part of the "karma ladder." They're beneath humans though. Kings and Priests are at the top. The lowest rung on the human ladder is the "untouchables." You aren't born into any caste by chance, you're born into it because of your karma level.
People are not allowed to progress in life (raise their caste level) because it would be contrary to their religious beliefs. The only way to raise one's caste is to die and be reincarnated.
This results to horrid mistreatment of the poor. If you're born poor, you're stuck there. You can't advance, and it's actually YOUR fault that you're there because of your actions in a past life.
So in short, India treats the poor terribly. Though I'm told they're getting better about it.
My advice to you is, keep in mind that when you're visiting, you're on the tourist track. This is the case for any nation. They don't show you what they don't want you to see. Do you think they bring Indian tourists into the Bronx Slums in NY? |
