Why is India considered to be a challenging travel destination? |
Many young people have successfully travelled through India, yet it is considered to be more suited to the intrepid traveller. Is it easy, moderately difficult, or very challenging? Why? Why not? Additional Details My travel agent advised me not to go, yet I have met young women who have been there, and said it was worthwhile. |

India can be both challenging and fascinating. It depends on where you want to go and how you want to travel. There are climatic differences. Some parts are sizzling at this time of the year (North India for example). At the same time it is very pleasant in the hill stations cradled in the Himalayas and in the mountain ranges in the South.
The mode of travel also is important. If you take internal flights to the major destinations you are insulated from the hustle and bustle of the country. If you travel by train ( and India has one of the largest train system and handles a few million passengers a day) you come into contact with the hasles that you do not experience in the West. The platforms are overflowing with people, the facilities are at the minimum. If you travel in Air Conditioned coached and sleepers it is less challenging. If you travel in the cheapest fares you will be travelling with a large number of passengers. This can be a cultural shock because nowhere in the West will you get so many passengers. The coaches are nothing like what you experience in the West. There is no AC, the seats are very plain and just a few toilets to each coach with such a large number of passengers. Yet a lot of young people from the West enjoy this experience. On the other extreme you have the great Palace on Wheel train journey considered to be one of the best in the world.
The accomodation can range from absoloutely the bare minimum to the sublime.with the erstwhile palaces converted to luxury hotels.
The levels of hygiene in the average hotels and destinations are far below what you considered as the minimum in the West.
Against all this you have great archetectural masterpieces like the Taj Mahal, the temples of Mahabalipuram, the cave paintings of Ajanta to name a few. You have great beaches in Goa and Kovalam , great trekking in the Himalayas.
You should tahe the normal precautions that you would in any country and you should be OK. However, given the huge difference in culture, language etc it is advisable that you do not travel alone as a back packer. It is fine if you stick to the better class of hotels travel by air or the AC coaches in trains
if you are travelling alone.
Language should not be a problem as the educated Indians speak English. This is also true of the popular tourist centres. Away from the cities and towns very few people can speak English.
The normal annoyances would be the beggars and hanger ons trying to sell you articles of doubtful quality. Stick to the Government emporiums and the better shops. You should be able to bargain at the bazaars which are very colourful and have a character of their own.
It is challenging because of ectremes. At one end you have great poverty and ignorance and prejudice at the other great opulence and great culture. Because of the large population labour is cheap. Taxis are cheap and chauffeur driven cars are the rule and is easily affordable. In the better hotels you will be waited upon and there will be people to help you in a way it is difficult to imagine in the West. |

Well friend. As an indian i'll say u many things about india. But not here in private. Well for ur question the main reason for india being a strong contender of tourism is that we have many new things and new cultures which no other country has. We have historical sculptures like u all but here they r different.
India is trying to develop its tourism more and more every year. Till now the tourism was increasing a lot. Even when there was indo-pak war in jammu&kashmir, one of our famous tourist spot people came in bulk to njoy their vacation because they know it is safe.
Well there r many young women here also. U have few restrictions here. Thats it. But these restrictions are also fast disappearing these days.
Indian people r really too frndly. I bet u'll never get a frnd like an indian in this world. They will b polite to u until u r polite to them. All people r very helpful and there r a lot to learn.
I bet once if u visit india u'll know hw true r my words....
hope u visit india soon...... |

The amount of cultures you would come across in India is uncountable, the way you travel would be another, in some cities you would be traveling in a AC bus with recliner chairs, in another city you might be traveling on a camel or in a bus kinda local truck where you are jammed between 20-30 people, its a variety of all sorts, just imagine you go into a restaurant and the serve every delicacy under the planet, that’s how india is, completely diverse, but a trip to India is two things, you will never forget it all your life, it will to some extent change the way you think and live......and its cheap too :-) |
