Why is India still lagging behind ? |
I took a tour of Asia recently. I see that Taiwan, South Korea and China have progressed very nicely during the past 10-20 years. Why is India still lagging behind (except for the software industry) ?
I do not mean this as an insult or anything; I am looking for some concrete reasons. I like to hear from educated Indians. |

I agree with almost all the above answers. My reasons are -
1. We are developing Gurgaon and Bangalore but not thinking a bit about Amnikapur, Mulipur like millions of villages and small towns. 60% of India's habitation are living with 1960 like infrastructure.
2. Every one thinks its government's duty to start developmental activity. Individually we do not have to do anything. Hardly 1% of Indian fulfills his/her duty to society other than tax paying.
3. Tax cheating by big industries and most of the businessmen.
4. We are contended with our past glory so much that we gorget we need to do something in present days too.
5. We get influenced very easily. Political leader take advantage.
There can be 100 more reasons... |

South Korea got a tremendous boost from the USA after the cease fire was declared. The same kind of boost that Japan got before that.
China indirectly also has gotten a tremendous boost from the USA as well. You would be very surprised at the number of Chinese that get their education in the USA and Europe. A very large number taking the know how back to China.
China has also deliberetly kept the wages low and hire a vast number of people to do the jobs. The control on the population groth and the fact that they can pay workers enough to have a better life than before even if it still seems very bad to you is making a vast population that is willing.
Capitalism can not work in china at this time. It is doing it the proper way by a little at a time and it is working for them.
India suposedly is a democracy has no real plan to curb the very fast growing population is not able to even feed the people properly. Many starve to death every day.
the money and education is only in the uper class of people and is doing very well. Now the iddle class are begining to see some benefits are now able to have most of the necessities of life. The lower classes are not going to see much gain for a long time. Just too many people.
The world is facing a very difficult time and it has already started. This global warming thing as well as so many others are a direct result of over population of this planet. Decreasing the number of people is the only answer. |

I am not a person from India but from what I have read and can see about India . . The following is the reasons . .
1. Religion and the cows wandering around here and there spreading disease . . Put them in large pens
2. The Schools . . If your people are not educated they are able to dig holes and not much else
3. The government is un able to manage its own abilities to make logical laws and help the people ( this is one place if a computer were making laws and running the country it would a lot better off )
4. The interior of India is totally un-developed at all, dirt roads no electricty .! . Simple things done to the interior would make it a country that can go some where better roads . . Wind generators or even solar power . . running water and things like that PVC pipe would make major differences to big area's
5. All of the above is holding back the country . .
Just about the same as Mexico except you have to add corrupt government |

Educated Indians migrate to countries where their skills are suitably rewarded. For example many doctors are working in the UK.
This leaves a skills shortage in India.
Add the fact that India is hugely over-populated what money is left is spread very thinly so the infrastructure has not developed..
Add the lack of education, in particular language skills.
Add the fact that there are literally hundreds of language across India.
You get the Picture ?

Its just that the policy matters in India take too long to implement add corruption to it and what you have is near zero development.
Also to blame are we the people who continue to simply ignore every wrong doing of the people at the helm of affairs. |

Well... from personal experience while visiting the country. I'd have to say they do not believe in themselves much. As I was driven down the streets to the place I was staying I saw things that made me feel really bad and I wanted to turn around and leave. I wasn't prepared for the things I saw. Humanity. All the comments I pretty much agree with and witnessed. I road the railway system and saw the lower cast people can't even behave like humans. It is so sad. Because of the People I was with they escorted us up to the front of the line before all these families who had been waiting for so long to get on a boat. It didn't feel right. Such a seen. Do it in private if need be. The people are reminded over and over they are less than another cast. I was coached to be harsh with beggers and yell at them if they touch me. Of course I couldn't. |

The rulers & their stupid policies
Ask a politician about a white, he will see the white as a enemy
That is what our national,Regional leaders, education etc teaches us.
Yes. As per our records, we still think/make our children think that the Westerners are barbarians and they conquered us, killed us, tortured us, bla bla bla, etc.
We saw the foreigners as a enemy till globalization, even today a few parties in india SAY THAT THE FOREIGN COMPANIES ARE OUR ENEMIES AND THEY WILL TAKE OUR WEALTH(?) ALONG WITH THEM.
A development comes in open minded talks.
If you want knowledge for growth, you should share your knowledge with others.
See France, the world's largest tourist attraction country.
The wealth they earn is through tourism
How is it possible
They accept everybody as their friend.
See Pondicherry. we have foreigners coming in and going out.
How ? Pondicherry is far developed than any other state in India.
How?
The reason is, after independence, there were hundreds of thousands of europeans in India.(Actually they were not Europeans, they were Indian born/Indian settled Europeans who settled before 4 to 5 generations in India)
Most of them worked for government and they never say europe, India was their nation.
But what we did, after independence.
Many Anglo Indians were killed by our patriots saying that their are the evil or the bad ones.
Even today lakhs of anglo indians Migrated from india are living in australia.
It never happened in Pomdicherry, because Pondicherry got freedom from france only by 1956.
Till date we are planting the poison in the minds of children that we were ill treated by Europeans and they robbed our country.
But the truth is, all the infrastructure we have(Railways, roadways, parliament, law, everything) are all given by them
And the bitter truth is the Europeans decided to leave all their conquered country free after the Nuclear bomb of second world war and after the formation of UN.
But we still say that we sent them out.
The History differs from side to side.
But we never accept that we have to join hands with the world for developments.
We also wont accept the truth very easily(Example - Ram's Bridge, Ram jenma Boomi, Etc) Science has clearly stated that they are all story, but we still believe on them.
We are closely watched by the world. If we need development, the politicians have to be changed. All Indian politicians should be like Dr.Abdul Kalam.
But is it possible to get atleast one similar to him?
Can we stop one literated youngster from going abroad for earning money?
We may have good labours for european call centres, but we dont have good leaders to lead the country
That is the major draw back of us. |

india is huge and hard to organise. the people are very hard workers and amiable . they have one of the most amazing countries on the planet and western investers will be vampiring it with gusto if the government there does not keep a firm leash on them, and make sure that the people are not used as guinea pigs for multinational pharmaceutical companies and underpaid slaves for greedy companies.
comments from jacquelyn s and tourism researcher show great naivette of reality. i can assure you jacquelyn that uneducated indians have many more talents than "digging holes" !! perhaps they should progress to such a degree that each of them should own a gun and the children can start using fellow students for target practice...like america..if that is what " ahead" is!!!!!
india is definitely "ripe for the picking" from the viewpoint of the west but indian people should stop criticising themselves
and rather, help each other and have respect for the amazingness of such a highly populated country that can coexist in such relative harmony.
progress is not all it's cracked up to b, just check the statistics for drug abuse, alcoholism, mental illness, annual murder rates, debt issues, living beyond ones means etc.just take it slowly and surely and don't b in such a hurry to have your own personal analyst!!! |

i wuld say try ur luck after 5 years.........take a tour in india at that time and you will regret your question......reasons for my stupidness are FDI ,FII,better economic reforms,globalisation,liberalisation....... in india is growing more in china ,global companies are preferring india as most attractive investment destinations.......examples r......gurgaon have grown as much in the last 5 months as england have grown in the last 25 yeras......that is truth and just needs ur verification[:)]......... people are getting open minded...taking risks........savings of people have decreasd by a significant amount......and now we can say india is a investment driven economy.......investment grows frm 26% last year to 34% year this year till now(sept)........rupee is strenthning like never before......a 14% increase blasting all the records.......exporters r been helped by the government....n thats a good example of unity among indians[:)]....jai hind......all the best for ur travel n touring next time to india |

India - is a very vast country, not just in area... but in Population we are close to being number 1 in world..
.
In population density we are in top 3
In education, our 60% literacy means 70 crores literate people ( 12 % of worlds population )
In train & road network we are no. 1 in the world.
In military force we are no. 3 in world
In financially powerful & development we are no 2 in the world.
.
Apart from software, we are in top legue in metals, medical, automobile & textile
.
remember we are dealing with 110 crore ppl
with Muslims & Christians giving equal rights
and we were left with zero treasury, depressed mentality & communal problems when British left us... or this is why they left us.
but now
.

India is still lagging behind because over 300 million Indians from the middle / upper-middle class are basically "indifferent" to all the socio-economico-politico and scientific development / changes that determines the destiny of any nation. Another 250 million Indians are poor and are concerned only with their two square meals while the rest are children and the aged who cannot contribute much in economic terms.
Finally, it is the minority group which constitutes mostly the "politically influenced" that are responsible for our country lagging behind that too for their vested interests !!! |
